Penobscot Moon

Get today's Name of the Moon in Penobscot and English, plus printable labels for canning and foraging projects.

The Penobscot calendar is lunisolar. A year runs from the longest, moonless night of one winter to the next, every new Moon starts a month of roughly 29.5 days, and when twelve months are spent before that night comes round again, a thirteenth is added.

So “what Moon is it?” is a harder question than it sounds. Penobscot Moon answers it for any date, and prints the answer onto a label you can stick on a jar.

Features

  • Today’s Moon name in Penobscot and English, the moment you open the app
  • Any date you pick, past or future, so you can label a batch you put up last season
  • Moon phase and percent illuminated shown alongside the name
  • Printable label sheets — twenty 2x2 inch labels to a page — for canning and foraging jars
  • A custom message on each label, or leave the notes box blank and handwrite it
  • The thirteenth moon handled for you in the years that have one
  • Works offline once installed, so it still answers you off-grid

How it works

The calendar runs on the device, so there is no network call after install. Pick a date and the app works the arithmetic from it: which lunar month that date falls in, how many days into it you are, and how much of the Moon was lit that night.

About

My wife has labelled her foraging and canning jars with the Penobscot name of the Moon for as long as I have known her. I found her at the kitchen table one day, mid-batch and stalled, trying to work out which Moon it actually was — and I couldn’t tell her. So I built this instead.

It was a gift, which is why it is free and always will be.
